Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton continue their research into the development of the post-industrial city as a concrete topography and an accumulation of cultural and historical energies. Berlin has allowed them to redefine the current notion of the ecological building by focusing their attention on the economical use of natural and urban resources and on a variety of scales.

The firm applies the most advanced technologies and passive-energy systems alongside a very rich use of colors, materials and textures, for a sensual engagement with the physical environment.

Some of the projects on show have won numerous awards : the GSW headquarters in Berlin, which confirmed the architects” reputation, awarded the BDA Prize – Berlin and the RIBA Award – UK (where they were shortlisted for the Stirling Prize); and the Photonics Centre in Berlin, which received the AIA Award, the Deutscher Architekturpreis, the WestHyp Preis, and the European Aluminium Imagination Award.
