Architecture – photographie

Exhibition organized on the occasion of the Mois de la Photo 2004, devoted to the architect Karl Schwanzer, as seen through the lens of the photographer Sigrid Neubert.

This is not an ordinary photography exhibition, but the fruit of a collaboration between two artists with an uncommon vision and sensibility.

Karl Schwanzer (Vienna, 1918 – 1975) is one of the most significant figures among 20th-century Austrian architects. Over more than thirty years of activity, he built a great number of celebrated structures both in Austria and abroad, such as the 20th Century Museum in Vienna, the Austrian Pavilion at the 1967 Universal Exposition in Montreal, the BMW headquarters complex in Munich, the Austrian Embassy in Brasília, and the master plan for the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Sigrid Neubert, a photographer, began specializing in architectural photography in the 1950s. Quickly noticed, she collaborated with the greatest German and Austrian architects. From 1990 onward, she pursued a personal exploration of landscape that earned her wide public recognition.

The exhibition presents around forty photographs centered on three of Schwanzer’s buildings : the apartment building in Vienna (1962), the BMW headquarters in Munich (1973), and the Austrian Embassy in Brasília (1975).
