The city of Graz, Austria, was the European Capital of Culture for 2003. For the occasion, a large number of architectural projects, art installations and special events were programmed.
The exhibition Curves & Spikes — presented at Galerie Aedes in Berlin in March/April 2003 — focuses on two buildings, genuinely radical projects for the city of Graz : the new Museum of Modern Art (2003), designed by the London-based architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, and the Congress Center (2002), built by Klaus Kada, an architect based in Graz.
Bringing two such different projects together in a single exhibition may come as a surprise. Their difference is visible not only in the projects” conceptual and philosophical approach, but is also expressed in their form : the blue bubble and the curved, biomorphic surfaces of the Museum of Modern Art on the banks of the Mur, and the Congress Center with its pointed, slender, oversized roof, suspended above the street.
